I Go By MUFC: The Superfan Who Battled to Change His Name
Inquire of any Manchester United devotee who is older concerning the meaning of 26 May 1999, and the answer will be that the occasion left an indelible mark. It was the moment when dramatic late goals from Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær completed an unbelievable come-from-behind victory in the showpiece event against the German giants at the famous Barcelona stadium. That same night, the life of one loyal follower in Bulgaria, who recently died at the age of 62, took a new direction.
Hopes in a Bygone Era
This individual was originally called Marin Levidzhov in a small Danube town, a settlement with a modest number of residents. Living in communist Bulgaria with a love of football, he aspired to changing his name to… his beloved club. However, to adopt the name of a organization from the Western world was a futile endeavor. Had Marin tried to do so prior to the end of communism, he would undoubtedly have been arrested.
A Commitment Sealed by Fate
Many seasons after the end of communism in Bulgaria – on the historic evening – Marin's personal goal moved nearer to reality. Tuning in from home from his simple residence in Svishtov and with his team losing, Marin vowed to himself: should his team mount a comeback, he would spare no effort to change his name that of the club he loved. Then, the impossible happened.
He realized his ambition to see the Theatre of Dreams.
A Protracted Court Struggle
The next day, Marin sought legal counsel to state his extraordinary desire, thus starting a grueling process. Marin’s father, from whom he had gained his fandom, was long gone, and the 36-year-old was caring for his parent, working all kinds of odd jobs, including as a builder on minimal earnings. He was struggling financially, yet his goal turned into a fixation. He rapidly evolved into the local celebrity, then gained worldwide attention, but many seasons full of judicial disputes and setbacks in litigation awaited him.
Copyright Hurdles and Partial Victories
His request was rejected initially for trademark concerns: he was barred from using the title of a world-famous brand. Then a court official granted a limited approval, saying Marin could alter his given name to Manchester but that he was not to use United as his official surname. “However, I desire to be associated with just a place in the UK, I want to wear the name of my cherished club,” Marin told the court. The battle persisted.
His Beloved Cats
Outside of legal proceedings, he was often caring for his feline friends. He had many animals in his outdoor space in Svishtov and loved them as much as the Manchester United. He christened them after United players: such as Vidic and others, they were the most famous cats in town. The one he loved most of the name they used? A kitty called Beckham.
Marin bedecked in United gear.
Progress and Integrity
Another victory was secured in court: he was permitted to include United as an official nickname on his personal papers. But still he wasn’t happy. “I won’t stop until my complete identity is Manchester United,” he promised. His tale attracted business offers – a proposal to have fan merchandise produced under his new name – but although he was in need, he declined the proposal because he refused to make money from his adored institution. The club's identity was inviolable.
Dreams Realized and Lasting Tributes
A film was made in that year. The filmmakers made his aspiration come true of experiencing the Theatre of Dreams and there he even had the chance to see the Bulgarian striker, the national team player on the team's roster at the time.
Permanently marked the United crest on his face subsequently as a protest against the court decisions and in his final years it became ever tougher for him to persist with his fight. Job opportunities were scarce and he suffered the death of his mother to Covid-19. But against the odds, he persevered. By birth a Catholic, he was christened in an orthodox church under the name Manchester United Zdravkov Levidzhov. “In the eyes of the divine, I am with my chosen name,” he would frequently remark.
Earlier this week, his time ran out. It is possible that Manchester United’s persistent fan could finally find peace.
