This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like standard physical horror, but within Together lies a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He dreads the concept of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that come with long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
